Types of childcare

Childcare centres

Childcare centres look after children in groups and, in addition to childcare, also provide early years education and social support. Different services are available depending on the child’s age and the centre’s opening hours.

The process for registering for a childcare place varies from one local authority to another: whilst in Würzburg and Veitshöchheim, for example, it is organised centrally, in other local authorities (such as Gerbrunn) it is handled directly by the individual centre.

Childminding

In home-based childcare, children are looked after in small groups by qualified childminders, often in the childminder’s own home. This form of childcare is particularly suitable for younger children and offers a family-like environment.

Au pair

An au pair lives with a family for a set period of time and helps out with day-to-day tasks, such as looking after the children or doing light housework. In return, the au pair receives accommodation, meals and a weekly allowance.

Babysitters

Babysitters look after children on an hourly basis, for example in the evenings or on individual days. This form of childcare is particularly suitable for short-term or flexible support in everyday family life.
