School system

The German school system is organised on a federal basis, which means that school types and regulations vary from one federal state to another. In Bavaria, children first attend primary school for four years before moving on (depending on their academic performance and interests) to different types of secondary school: usually a Gymnasium, a Realschule or a Mittelschule.

Primary schools generally operate under the so-called ‘Sprengel’ principle: children attend the primary school designated for their place of residence. It is generally possible to attend a different primary school, but this requires a well-justified application to change schools. Families can then choose a secondary school based on their child’s academic ability. On this page, you will find an overview of the school system in Bavaria, as well as information on starting school and choosing a school.
