Application and Requirements
Requirements
The Master’s degree is explicitly intended as a research-oriented course for students who already have previous knowledge of Digital Humanities to the extent of a Bachelor’s degree. The following are expected:
- a completed Bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS)
- Previous knowledge in the field of Digital Humanities (at least 60 ECTS), such as can be acquired in our BA Digital Humanities degree programs, always including
- 10 ECTS mathematics
- 5 ECTS programming
- 5 ECTS machine learning
- previous knowledge from a subject in humanities or cultural sciences (at least 20 ECTS).
- English language skills on level B2.
Students who wish to switch to the MSc after completing our BA Digital Humanities should therefore attend Introduction to Advanced Mathematics 1 and 2 in particular. Of course, this is also possible if the course is not included in your degree program.
During application, students will need to submit their Bachelor’s certificate, their transcript(s) of records, or similar information to certify their previous knowledge. For a smooth transition between Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, it is possible to apply if you only have 150 ECTS finished yet (but plan to be finished with your Bachelor’s programme until the start of the Master in october). If your documents are in a language other than English or German, you will have to provide a (certified) translation. We do not require a VPD by uni-assist.
Since the whole program will be taught in English, applicants need to supply proof of English language proficiency at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
This can be, for example, one of:
- the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with at least 72 points (internet-based TOEFL test) or
- the International English Language Test System (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 or better or
- a Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) or
- at least a satisfactory grade in English (corresponding to at least 7 out of 15 points) in a domestic higher education entrance qualification (e.g., Abitur) or a foreign equivalent with proven knowledge of English that is at least equivalent or
- proof that training has already been completed (in particular as part of the first degree program) with English language skills at the level mentioned above.
