EDIT Video Challenge 2026
You always wanted to make your own video? This is your chance!
In the EDIT Video Challenge, you’ll work in teams to develop an idea, produce and bring your own film to the big screen. Five days packed with creativity, teamwork and experimentation!
Whether you’re a student, staff member or lecturer, EDIT is your chance to gain intensive video experience in a short space of time.
International experience included: universities from around the world are taking part, and the event will culminate in an online screening of the winning videos!
Better done than perfect: you don’t need any experience. We’ll provide the equipment, support and the necessary basics.

- Equipment & support on site at the ZBL
Awards and closing event! 4 December, 4.30 pm
Joint screening and celebration of the videos at the ZBL
A five-day, university-affiliated, international video challenge in which participants work in teams to create their own short video (max. 4 mins).
EDIT website: https://www.editvideochallenge.org/
At the start, three keywords will be published. The teams must:
- turn the three keynotes into a shared idea, develop a story or concept, plan and shoot their video, edit and produce the footage, and submit a finished video within the specified timeframe.
- The video must not exceed four minutes in length.
- The video must be understandable to an international audience (in English or German with subtitles, or through other creative solutions).
The challenge runs for five days. That doesn’t mean you have to work on it continuously for five days. The aim is to have a short, intensive creative phase during which an idea is turned into a finished video. The teams decide for themselves how to organise their time.
Ideally, teams should consist of 4–5 participants. You don’t need to turn up with a team already formed. Feel free to come on your own or with friends – teams will be formed on the kick-off meeting.
No. All you need is the desire to dive into a video project with your team for a short, intensive period.
‘The EDIT’ is your chance to experience every stage of film production in fast-forward: developing a concept, working in front of or behind the camera, editing and post-production – you and your team decide where to focus your efforts. We’ll provide an introduction and support, and then it’s simply a case of getting on with it, true to the motto: better done than perfect.
No. In principle, you can film the video using your own smartphone. In addition, laptops with editing software, as well as professional cameras and other equipment, are available to hire from the ZBL’s equipment hire service. A room and (technical) support are also provided on site.
We at the ZBL are organising EDIT at the University of Würzburg. Our rooms are where we’ll meet for the kick-off and the closing event. Anyone who wishes to do so can also use our co-working and creative workspace, Treffpunkt 108, at the ZBL for video production (Josef-Martin-Weg 54/1, Room 108). However, you can film and work as a team from anywhere.
Yes. Only use your own content or content that has been properly licensed, particularly when it comes to music, images, videos and graphics. If other people appear in your video, you need their consent to film and publish it.
Your finished video must be submitted via YouTube and published there under a Creative Commons (CC) licence. The video must be no longer than four minutes and must contain all three EDIT keywords.
The jury will assess your video in three areas: Educational Value (1–10 marks), Technical Merits (1–5 marks) and Artistic Quality (1–5 marks). The educational value of the content is the most important criterion.
As well as an unforgettable time together, new contacts and lots of experiences packed into just a few days, you’ll gain fame and glory!
The winners will be featured internationally on the EDIT website. You’ll also receive a little surprise gadget from us and, of course, plenty of applause at the joint screening.
