In this workshop, you will work on your academic presentation skills, improving these through your recorded and live presentations, peer- and trainer-feedback. Via trainer instruction and input before and in the workshops, you will advance your academic presentation skills for conferences, as well as for teaching international students. Individual work and interaction will be essential when applying key didactic approaches, including structuring your presentations, didactic reduction, and audience activation.
Topics: Presentation Structure, Phase-Orientation, Learning Aims/Outcomes, Didactic Reduction, Motivational Design, Activation of Audience, Visualization, Academic Presentation Vocabulary, Constructive Feedback, Peer Feedback
Methodology: There will be a mix of theoretical input and practical application in the workshop.
- Before Day 1 (2 CU), participants will prepare a written and visualized presentation (e.g. vis PPP) on a topic of your choice for a 10-minute presentation, record the presentation, and upload it (more info on procedure will be provided)
- On Day 1 (8 CU), participants work individually, in pairs, and in small groups (breakout sessions) to integrate didactic elements, provided by the trainer, in their presentations, revising their presentations accordingly, followed by delivering them again in break out rooms, providing and receiving constructive feedback there, then discussing key challenges in the workshop group
- Between sessions (2 CU), participants will revise their presentations according to the received feedback, record and upload their presentation once more, receive and provide peer-feedback via a criteria catalogue asynchronously, then revise their presentation one more time, uploading it for trainer review and feedback
- On workshop day 2 (4 CU), participants will receive trainer feedback on aspects to improve, revise and write down a checklist for their future presentations
Key Takeaways for Your Teaching Practice: After completing the workshop, you will have developed a didactically revised presentation and checklist for future presentations for conference and in-class use. With this, you can improve your academic presentation skills along specific criteria, promoting your audience to follow your presentation from the start and to keep focused on it, reaching the outcomes you have intended with your presentation.
