Matthias Weiss

...studied physics in Frankfurt (1992-1995) and in Heidelberg (1995-1997), where he received his Diploma in Physics with a thesis on surface acoustic waves. From 1997-2000 he was a PhD student at the MPI for Fluid Dynamics (Dept. Nonlinear Dynamics) in Göttingen where he received his PhD with a thesis on quantum signatures of chaos. He then branched off to biology and biophysics, working as a Postdoc at EMBL Heidelberg and later at the MEMPHYS-Center for Biomembrane Physics in Odense, Denmark. In 2004 he started his junior group at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg within the framework of the BIOMS initiative. Combining theory, simulation, and experiments, his main areas of research since then are transport processes and dynamic self-organisation phenomena in living matter.

Our research addresses challenging problems at the interface of physics and biology with an emphasis on a quantitative understanding of dynamic self-organization processes in living matter, e.g. complex transport processes, organelle formation and homeostasis, and the dynamic self-organization of cells during embryogenesis. To this end we mainly utilize advanced light microscopy techniques in combination with several simulation approaches.
