His research topic has also recently made headlines: CAR-T-Cells.  These are immune cells which can be inserted into cancer cells in the laboratory.  The University of Würzburg and the University Hospital Würzburg are leading research centres in this field.  Some cancer patients have already been successfully treated with CAR-T-Cells; in March 2019 one such patient was introduced to the press.

Hardikkumar Jetani carried out his research under the supervision of one of the leading experts for these cells, Dr. Michael Hudecek.  The topic of the thesis is the specialisation of CAR-T-Cells for acute myeloid leukemia.

The conclusion of the work was celebrated with ceremony.  The reason: It was the 500th doctoral thesis to be successfully completed and defended in the GSLS of the University of Würzburg.

Important Cornerstone of Internationalisation

The GSLS was founded in 2006 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments and was funded by the Excellence Initiative for 12 years.  An average of 60 graduations take place each year. “The GSLS has proven with its structured and quality-assuring programme that it is an institution integral to the life sciences at the University.  For this reason a substantial portion of graduations in the life sciences take place through the GSLS” said Caroline Kisker, Dean of the GSLS.

There is a high international representation among the doctoral researchers and the alumni of the GSLS.  The reason? The GSLS has a unique feature in Würzburg: it can confer the international doctoral title Ph.D.  This is an important cornerstone of the internationalisation of the University of Würzburg, according to Prof. Kisker.

Hardikkumar Jetani to stay as Postdoc

“Jubilee doctor” Jetani comes from India and will continue his successful research in the research group of Dr. Hudecek as postdoc.  His position can continue to be funded for a further four years through the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio (SFB-TR) 221 “Modulation of graft-versus-host and graft-versus leukemia immune responses after allogeneic stem cell transplantation”
