Legal basis for equality work
State level
Art. 118, para. 2: of the Constitution of the Free State of Bavaria:
"Men and women shall in principle have the same civic rights and duties"
The Bavarian Act on Equality between Women and Men (BayGlG) of 24 May 1996, which was extended indefinitely by the Act amending the Bavarian Equality Act of 23 May 2006, provides a legal basis for the promotion of equality between women and men in the public sector in Bavaria.
Federal level
Art. 3, para. 2: of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany:
"Women and men shall have equal rights. The state shall promote the actual realisation of equal rights for women and men and shall work towards the elimination of existing disadvantages."
European level
At European level, equality between women and men was first enshrined in the Amsterdam Treaty in 1999.
