About us
The Career Centre was founded in the summer semester of 2007 as a staff unit of the university management and today consists of five employees with different specialisations as well as student assistants and interns. As Department 2.5, the Career Centre has been part of the Service Centre for Students since May 2023. There, it complements the existing advisory services of the Central Student Advisory Service and the Service Centre InterNational Transfer with the classic advisory approaches of Career Service work.
Our team has the task of supporting all students at the University of Würzburg throughout the student life cycle in preparing for their career entry. To this end, we offer a diverse programme of events and various advisory formats relating to career paths every semester.
We look forward to supporting you!
Founded in 1985 and formally constituted with a charter in 1987, the Coimbra Group is an association of 37 traditional European multidisciplinary universities of high international standards. The University of Würzburg has been a founding member of the Coimbra Group since 1985. It is the oldest university in present-day Bavaria and the only Bavarian member of the Coimbra Group.
The Coimbra Group acts as one of the most influential lobby groups at European level in the fields of science and higher education. It strives to create special academic and cultural links in order to promote internationalisation, academic cooperation, excellence in teaching and research and service to society for the benefit of its members. The mutual exchange of experience is particularly valuable and often contributes to the development or further development of good practice in all areas of university activity. The group also aims to influence European education policy and develop best practice through the mutual exchange of experience.
JMU participates in projects and events and is active with representatives in the 12 working groups of the Coimbra Group. These are: Life Sciences, Research Support Officers, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences & Humanities, Academic Exchange and Mobility, Doctoral Studies, Education Innovation, Employability, Development Cooperation, Heritage, Latin America and Equality and Diversity. Career Centre Director Dr Annette Retsch has represented JMU in the Coimbra Group since 2018 and has served as Vice-Chair of the Employability Working Group since 2022.
The University of Würzburg is the oldest university in Bavaria and the only Bavarian member of the Coimbra Group. JMU participates in projects and events and is active with representatives in the 12 working groups of the Coimbra Group. The activities are coordinated by the International Relations Office. JMU's Coimbra Group representative and contact person is Florian Evenbye.
The Coimbra Group regularly publishes scientific articles on topics related to its fields of work and interest. An article was recently published in the EIAE Winter Forum 2025 that describes key future skills for students and presents approaches on how universities can promote these skills.
The Uni Wü Community of the University of Würzburg offers current and former students, employees, lecturers and professors a wide range of opportunities to network with other alumni, such as the mentoring programme.
As part of the mentoring programme, students, doctoral candidates and young graduates have the opportunity to benefit from the experience of working JMU alumni who volunteer as mentors.
The Career Service Network Germany (csnd) was founded in 2003 by existing career services. The network works closely with the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and today has almost 200 members. Universities as institutional members and career service employees are involved in the association for the development and expansion of career preparation programmes at universities and for the career orientation and preparation of students.
As an umbrella organisation, csnd e.V. is committed to
- for the development and safeguarding of standards for the professionalisation of career service work
- for the task-specific qualification of its members
- as an interface for all those involved in the process of organising the transition from study to work
- as a contact for international partners (NACE, AGCAS, FEDORA etc.)
The field of career services is dynamic and requires a high level of expertise and qualifications. The CSND therefore offers a comprehensive further education programme that focuses on career service work. We also take part in these training courses for our students on an ongoing basis and continue our education.
At regular meetings , we also exchange ideas with other career services and discuss various current topics.

Do you have a topic that you would like to present to our students in the form of a lecture or workshop ? If it fits in with our portfolio, we will be happy to include your offer in our regular semester programme.
We will advertise the offer as part of our semester programme via our website, the print brochure, social media, etc. Students register in the regular way via the online course catalogue. If the number of registrations exceeds the number of places available, we draw lots.
In terms of content, everything is possible that helps our students to orientate themselves professionally, successfully master their career entry or develop key competences relevant to their profession. Target group-specific programmes are also possible, e.g. as part of the "Lecture series for students of the humanities" or the "Careers in practice" lecture series. We will work with you to find a suitable framework and time during the semester.
