Geographical location

The Botanical Garden (49° 46' N. B. 9° 56' E. L.) is located on a loess-covered shell limestone slope of the Main Valley, which slopes eastwards from around 220 to 190 metres above sea level. The hillside location has proven to be favourable for the relief design and structure of the garden and has enabled it to be attractively integrated into its surroundings, which are still characterised by diverse landscape structures shaped by viticulture.

Climate

The Main Valley near Würzburg is one of the climatically favoured areas in Central Europe. Its wine-growing climate is characterised by high summer temperatures (July average: 18.3 °C) and low annual precipitation (approx. 600 mm/year). Most of the precipitation falls during the main vegetation period, which lasts 150 days (with an average temperature of over 10 °C).

The average temperature of the coldest month (January) is -0.3 °C, the absolute minimum/maximum is -24.0/39.4 °C and the average annual temperature is 9.6 °C.

Climate measuring station in the Botanical Garden (parts of the greenhouse complex can be seen behind the climate measuring station)

In addition to air temperature, humidity and air pressure, precipitation, wind speed and wind direction as well as special light and heat radiation, leaf wetting by rain and dew, temperature and humidity at different soil depths are measured. This should provide in-depth insights into the growth, development and functions of plants.

The acquisition of the climate measuring station was funded by the Würzburg University Association.
