GSiK conditions of participation

In principle, our courses are open to all students at the University of Würzburg. This also includes enrolled doctoral students.

The following also applies:

  • Our lectures are usually open to the public. Anyone interested can attend such events.
  • It is also possible to attend GSiK events if you enrol in accordance with the usual rules for guest students at the University of Würzburg. You can find more information about guest studies here.
  • You can acquire an additional GSiK qualification if you are enrolled in a degree programme at the University of Würzburg or are registered as a guest student at JMU.

Events are always deemed to be GSiK events if they are listed in the GSiK website event calendar. This also applies to language courses and courses not related to the degree programme.

Seminars can also be found on WueStudy in the course catalogue under "Courses for students of all faculties/Global Systems and Intercultural Competence".

ECTS and GSiK points are independent systems for recognising academic achievements.

You need ECTS points to obtain your degree (B.A., M.A. or St.Ex.). The study and examination regulations for your degree programme determine (completely independently of GSiK) for which courses you can receive how many ECTS points. In many cases, it is also possible to gain ECTS points in GSiK courses, e.g. via the ASQ pool (--> see FAQ "Can I have ECTS points credited for my degree programme via GSiK courses?")

You need GSiK points to gain one of the GSiK additional qualifications. You will receive one GSiK point for each GSiK event (whether seminar, workshop or lecture). You need five GSiK points for the "GSiK additional qualification" and ten for the "extended GSiK additional qualification". At least two or four GSiK points must be from seminars and every GSiK area must be covered. You can find more information on the requirements for the GSiK additional qualification on our information page on the GSiK additional qualifications.

There is no examination for lectures/workshops. All you need to do is attend and register on the attendance list.

In the case of seminars , the lecturers responsible for the event decide which performance must be achieved for the seminar to be recognised as part of the GSiK additional qualification.

Many GSiK courses are part of the ASQ pool and/or the free area for the teacher training programme. In this case, you can earn the ECTS points that you have to earn in the ASQ or free area in GSiK courses.

There are also GSiK courses that are offered as part of the regular degree programmes. If you are studying the relevant subject, you can also have these courses credited as part of your degree programme and for GSiK.

If you would like the GSiK course (e.g. as a key qualification) to count towards your degree programme, you must complete a course specified in your examination regulations, for which you may also receive a grade. You can find the exact regulations for this in your examination regulations. Here too, the respective lecturer will decide on the exact requirements.

However, it is not possible to gain ECTS points in all GSiK seminars.

You can obtain specific information on performance expectations from the respective GSiK lecturers or on WueStudy.

We generally recommend that you register on the attendance lists, as this is the only way you can later prove that you have attended the course. Sometimes students only realise later that they have actually attended enough GSiK events for the additional qualification and then want to have it issued. This is only possible if you have signed the attendance lists.

You have time to acquire a GSiK additional qualification as long as you are enrolled at the University of Würzburg, regardless of the degree programme.

How to register and participate:

Firstly, you must register for GSiK seminars and workshops on WueStudy before the event. You will then receive all further information on access (e.g. the Zoom link) by email from the lecturer in good time before the first meeting.

The GSiK lectures are open to all interested parties, so you do not need to register in advance.
To find the Zoom link, register in the course room "GSiK participation lists ONLINE" on WueCampus. There you will find information on access under the respective event.
Interested parties without a WueCampus login are welcome to send us an email and will then be sent the access link separately.

During the respective event, you will receive a password to register your participation in the WueCampus room "GSiK participation lists ONLINE". Only with this confirmation of participation will you receive a GSiK point for the event.

In some cases, other access regulations apply to events organised by our partners; you will be informed of this in our event calendar. If you have any questions, please contact the relevant institution.

GSiK additional qualifications: general information

A GSiK additional qualification is proof issued by the University of Würzburg that you are committed and qualified in the important field of intercultural competence. It is therefore a valuable addition to your application portfolio.

There is an additional qualification in the subject area of "Sustainability" and two different additional qualifications - comparable to a basic and an advanced level - in the subject area of "Intercultural Competence". Which additional qualification you can apply for depends on how many GSiK events you have attended. You can find out the exact requirements for all GSiK additional qualifications on our information page on GSiK additional qualifications.

It is also possible to apply for an individual certificate for a single GSiK event.

The following two case studies will make it a little clearer which additional qualification might be suitable for your situation and what you need to consider in each case:

Example 1:

Yasemin has already attended the following three courses: 1. HumanCare-Professional Volunteering with Refugees(seminar), 2. Sustainability Management(lecture) and 3. Contemporary Religious Culture(block seminar). She would like to have these recognised for the GSiK areas A (1.), B ( 2.) & C ( 3.).

She has already collected 3 GSiK points (one for each event). Now she is still missing 2 courses from areas D and E for the GSiK additional qualification. As she has already attended two seminars, she can now choose whether these events should be seminars, lectures or workshops.

One seminar that interests her is "Gender Diversity in India and Germany". In the calendar of events, she sees that this seminar counts for areas B, C and D. So she decides to take this seminar for area D. So that she doesn't get confused, she makes a note of the assignments on her personal course overview.

Yasemin is studying Special Needs Education (BA). For area E (non-degree programme studies), she has to choose a course that is assigned to a department that is not involved in her degree programme. She first looks at courses that are assigned to the"interdisciplinary" department, as these are considered "unrelated to the degree programme" for all students. In the end, however, she decides in favour of a course from Sinology.

Yasemin has now collected all the points for her GSiK additional qualification and can apply for her additional qualification.

Example 2:

Baran is in his final semester. He has already attended several GSiK events in recent years, including 3 seminars. That was a total of 6 events. As these courses all took place before the 2017/18 winter semester, he can now choose the areas for which the courses are to be credited(transitional rule).

As he also studied abroad for a semester, he can also have this stay abroad credited as an additional GSiK seminar. He has thus achieved the 4 "GSiK seminar points" required for the extended GSiK additional qualification and has already collected a total of 7 GSiK points.

In order to acquire the remaining 3 GSiK points, he wants to attend the GSiK day. Here he can earn three "GSiK lecture points" in one day by taking part in the keynote lecture, a workshop and the fishbowl discussion. As he has already covered all GSiK areas with the "old" events, he can now freely choose which workshops he would like to attend on GSiK Day.

This means that Baran has collected all the points for his extended GSiK additional qualification and can apply for his additional qualification.

Yes, you can have an individual GSiK certificate issued for each individual GSiK event that you successfully complete. As usual, the prerequisite is that you have successfully completed the event and have signed the attendance list.

In the GSIK additional qualifications, a distinction is only made between the two categories "seminar" and "lecture". If you take part in a workshop from the GSIK programme, it will normally be recognised as a "lecture" and credited towards your additional qualification. If the workshop is of seminar length (at least 15 hours), it will be recognised as a "seminar". The same applies to other types of events such as panel discussions or excursions.

On GSiK days a variety of different event formats such as lectures and workshops take place. As a rule, you can have each of these credited individually as a lecture and thus "collect" several GSiK events in one day.

Important: You must register for some workshops on WueStudy.

The GSiK areas assign all GSiK events to content areas.

Many courses are assigned to several areas. For your additional qualification, a course can be taken into account exactly once for exactly one area.

You decide for which area you would like to have the respective course credited. You enter this in your personal event overview and indicate this when applying for your additional qualification.

The following applies: In order to receive a GSiK additional qualification/an extended GSiK additional qualification, you must cover all GSiK areas at least once.

Area E is a special case among the GSiK areas.

It is not listed separately in the calendar of events, as the criterion "not related to the degree programme" is different for each student.
You can therefore look for suitable events for you personally from the general calendar of events !

A course isnot related to your degree programme if it is assigned to a department that is not primarily involved in your degree programme. For example, if you are enrolled on the Bachelor's degree programme in Special Education (Department of Special Education) at the Faculty of Human Sciences, the courses from the Department of Teacher Education are considered to be unrelated to your degree programme.

Students with major and minor subjects from several departments: Unfortunately, you CANNOT have GSiK courses from the subject area of your minor subject credited to you as unrelated to your degree programme in terms of the GSiK additional qualifications. The subjects are part of your regular degree programme and are therefore not considered to be unrelated to your degree programme. With this regulation, we would like to encourage you to engage with our topics beyond the boundaries of your own "subject area", because the project thrives above all on its interdisciplinarity.

Double degree programme: If you are completing a double degree programme, one of your two degree programmes will count as interdisciplinary.

Interdisciplinary department: There are also courses that aregenerally considered to be unrelated to the degree programme forall students . These are courses that are assigned to the "interdisciplinary" department. They can therefore all be credited to area E. These courses are usually organised by institutions that do not offer their own degree programme, such as the Ecology Department or the GSiK office itself.

The following criteria apply to volunteer work of more than 5 hours:
- it must have taken place on a voluntary basis,
- it must take place within the enrolled period of study,
- an institution must certify the volunteer work. This institution can be, for example, a club, an association or a social organisation.

If you are unsure whether your voluntary work will be recognised as part of the additional qualification "Sustainability and Global Responsibility", please contact us by e-mail.

The voluntary work is not part of a degree programme at the University of Würzburg.

We therefore recommend that you take out personal liability insurance, unless you already have appropriate insurance cover through an existing insurance policy or co-insurance (e.g. with your parents or partner).

All courses up to and including the summer semester 2017 will be recognised for sections A, B, C and D. This means that you will not be at a disadvantage if you started your GSiK degree programme before the 2017/18 winter semester.

Section E corresponds to the previous rule, according to which you must attend at least one non-subject-related course. The introduction of this area therefore does not change anything.

No, unfortunately not. Only events that are officially integrated into the GSiK programme can be credited towards the GSiK additional qualifications.

Yes, you can have stays abroad that are organised through the University of Würzburg or that you have completed as part of your studies at the University of Würzburg credited towards the GSiK additional qualification. This can be a semester, year or internship abroad.

The stay abroad can be counted as a GSiK seminar and counts for the area: D (Culture-specific competences).

Stays abroad that did not take place as part of your degree programme at the University of Würzburg cannot be credited.

On your final additional qualification, we will list all of your achievements acquired as part of the respective additional qualification, even if they exceed the minimum level required for the respective additional qualification! The prerequisite is that you have signed the attendance list.

These surplus courses can be credited towards a further additional qualification.

GSiK additional qualifications: Application

You can apply for the additional qualification by e-mail (to: gsik@uni-wuerzburg.de). We have compiled the documents you need to send us here. It will be sent to you after completion. Please remember to include your address.

If you have only taken part in individual GSiK events for which you have no further proof, you can have your participation confirmed. Fill out this application form and send it to us by e-mail. We will check whether you have successfully participated and send you a certificate by post. Please remember to include your address.

In order to prove your successful participation, it is essential that you have entered your name on the participation lists for the events or that you present a confirmation from the lecturer(s).
