CCCUW Organizes Coimbra Group Konferenz
European Universities Collaboration with China: Opportunities and Risks for Academic Exchange

On 29 February, the CCCUW, in collaboration with the Coimbra Group, is organising a conference on 'European Universities' Collaboration with China'. At this conference, scientists and research support staff from all over Europe will travel to Würzburg to discuss the opportunities and challenges of scientific exchange with China.
Background
China has been identified as a “partner for cooperation and negotiation, an economic competitor and a systemic rival” in the latest strategic documents of the European Commission. While cooperation with China is intense and appreciated in many areas, concerns about China’s motives in the cooperation, growing awareness about the risks of dependence as well as pressure by the US on Europe against the background of US policies related to the China-US rivalry have contributed to more recent discussions about how Europe should position itself vis a vis China. Increasingly, respective discussions, advocacy inputs, and policy debates address the realm of science & technology cooperation as well as cooperation between European research institutes and HEIs with China.
In random talks, in which the conference idea was formulated, all interlocutors from different COIMBRA universities strong interest. The impression has been that there is a real demand for in-depth discussion and strategic orientation.
Purpose
Against this background, this conference invites COIMBRA-Group member universities to learn about the state of the discussions on EU-China relations of HEIs, to exchange their experiences with related national and EU policies, and to discuss ways ahead that allows universities to continue cooperation with China while avoiding the risks attached to it.
