From Legislation to Practice: The Reform of Philantropic Incentives across Two Studies of the Spanish Non-Profit Sector

This lecture presents two complementary empirical studies analysing the financial structure and transparency of non-profit entities in Spain in the context of the 2023 reform of the philanthropic giving regime, the observable effects of which have only become measurable from 2026 onwards. Drawing on data from two distinct samples —foundations and locally-anchored non-profit organisations providing direct assistance to vulnerable groups— the studies examine whether the reform has produced changes in income diversification, public funding dependence and accountability practices. The lecture will further outline a prospective research line on non-profit entities in Germany, with a particular focus on organisations active in environmental sustainability, building on data gathered during a previous research stay.
