"Susan Kigula is a Ugandan lawyer and anti-death penalty activist. In 2000, she was arrested, convicted of murder, and later sentenced to death. Despite maintaining her innocence, she spent many years on death row at Luzira Women’s Prison in Kampala.

During her imprisonment, Kigula advocated for prisoners’ rights and education, helped establish a school for women, and studied law.

Kigula served as the lead petitioner in a constitutional challenge to Uganda’s death penalty. The Supreme Court of Uganda ruled against the mandatory imposition of the death penalty and found that prolonged delays in carrying out death sentences could amount to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. The rulings contributed to the commutation of approximately 180 death sentences. Kigula’s own sentence was ultimately reduced to 20 years’ imprisonment, and she was released in 2016.

Since her release, Kigula has campaigned internationally for the abolition of the death penalty and has become a prominent advocate for prison reform and human rights. We look forward to hearing about her experiences and insights."
