Mountain plant house

The Mountain Glasshouse

The mountain glasshouse is located above the rest of the greenhouse complex (at the end of the first terrace above the tropical show house). Covering an area of 36 square metres, it houses around 250 plant species from the alpine stage of the various mountain regions of the world.

In Würzburg's wine-growing climate, the plants, which originate from the various alpine and sub-polar regions of the world, are often cultivated 'under glass' to protect them from excessive winter moisture due to the lack of snow cover. During very warm summer periods, a sunshade over the roof reduces the heat.

The planting areas are divided into 13 sub-areas using different rock types:

- Alps: Limestone Mountains
- Alps: Silicate Mountains
- Apennines
- Pyrenees
- SW-Europe: Limestone Mountains
- SW-Europe: Silicate Mountains
- SE Europe
- Asia Minor
- W and M Asia
- NW Africa
- North America
- South America
- New Zealand and Australia

The plants presented, were selected mainly on the basis of morphological and ecological aspects. They mainly include cushion plants of various shapes. The cushions of the primrose plant Dionysia aretioides, which bloom yellow here in spring, are only found in the wild in the mountains of northern Iran.
