Medicinal plant garden
The plants in this section are categorised according to their main ingredients.
In the historiy of mankind, medicinal plants have been used successfully in the treatment of illnesses and disorders. Camomile and peppermint tea for stomach upsets or colds, but also marigold ointment or St John's wort capsules are certainly among the best known.
Medicines of herbal origin are known as phytopharmaceuticals. These contain active pharmaceutical ingredients!
They therefore differ significantly from homeopathic remedies, which are so heavily diluted that nothing of the original substance is left.
In contrast to chemically defined active ingredients, herbal remedies are usually mixtures of multiple substances. These act on different molecular target structures in the organism.
Herbal active ingredients have often served as a model for the production of synthetic medicines.
The use of medicinal plants has a very long tradition. But even in modern conventional medicine, herbal preparations are often used alongside synthetic medicines to treat diseases.
The active ingredients and their effects are very diverse and influence the various body systems:
Skin, immune system, respiratory tract, nerves and brain, hormones, urinary tract, skeletal and muscular system, circulation and heart as well as the digestive organs.
Only a few of the medicinal plants used in Germany come from domestic cultivation. The majority are still imported and mainly come from wild collections.
