Panel Discussion on the Social Credit System

The Chinese Social Credit System Revisited: Implementation, Impact, Irritation
Date: 06/29/2023, 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Speaker: Sishi Xie

To conclude the bidt project 'Learning from the Frontrunner' on the social credit system, the CCCUW and bidt are organising a panel discussion on the 29th June at 17:30 in room 00.006 of the Graduate School (Beatrice Edgell Weg 21) in which experts will debate the controversial social credit system in China.

China's social credit system is an artificial intelligence-powered system designed to improve moral behaviour, financial reliability and social control. It is one of the most significant examples of radical digital innovation and the largest social engineering experiment in the world to date. Its impact goes beyond China, as it affects foreign companies and individuals in China - including those from Germany.

Against this background, the interdisciplinary research project "Learning from the Frontrunner? A multidisciplinary analysis of the Chinese social credit system and its impact on Germany" aims to examine the opportunities and risks of the digital transformation emanating from China and its impact on the state, companies and society in Germany. To conclude the research project, the China Competence Centre of the University of Würzburg is organising an event together with the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation to discuss the implications of the social credit system for Germany.

The event will take place in room 00.006 of the Graduate School (Beatrice Edgell Weg 21) from 17:30 on 29 June. At the beginning of the event, Xie Sishi from Sinolytics will give an input on the impact of the social credit system on international enterprises in China. Afterwards, Ms. Xie, together with Professor Doris Fischer (University of Würzburg), Prof. Dr. Omar Serano (Bern University of Applied Science) and Dr. Chen Mo  (TU Munich), will discuss the topic 'Social Credit System in China from a variety of angles. The discussion will be led by another expert from the bidt project, Ms. Lena Wassermann. The event will be held in English. Food and drinks included!
