Sphingolipid trafficking and function in Chlamydiales infection

Chlamydia trachomatis depends on the uptake of ceramide from the host cells. We will focus on the vesicular and non-vesicular ceramide transport to the Chlamydia-containing vacuole (inclusion) and the bacteria in phagocytic cells. The project will also address the role of sphingolipids in chlamydial escape from cell autonomous defense by suppressing apoptosis signaling and subversion of autophagy in infected phagocytes.
