Biodiversity path
In this project, we are creating a biodiversity path that connects the Hubland South and Hubland North campuses of the University of Würzburg. To this end, we are installing information boards on small biotopes and special biotope types on campus to inform staff and students about the value of biodiversity and the current biodiversity crisis. The boards explain the measures already being implemented on the Hubland Campus. At the same time, we want to encourage the public to observe animals and plants on the campus themselves and report their findings to us.
Five of the planned locations have been implemented on the South Campus so far, and three more locations are already in the planning stage.
Do you have design experience and would like to help us design the information boards? Then get in touch with us!

Establishing small biotopes
“Order is half of life” (German saying). We want to promote life in all its diversity and are therefore bringing a little disorder back to the campus.
Piles of stones and brushwood, dead wood, sand piles, and open ground are important microhabitats for insects and other animals. They provide important refuges and breeding grounds. In the “tidy” cultural landscape and our “neat” gardens, these important habitats are increasingly missing.
We want to promote the existing diversity on campus with various small biotopes along the biodiversity path. Small biotopes provide structurally rich habitats for many plants and animals. The areas are mowed only once a year and enriched with various structural elements (e.g., nesting aids for insects, open ground, piles of stones, and dead wood).
In October 2019, we already created two of these habitats, each measuring about 10 m2. Take a look behind the Biozentrum and in front of the Max Scheer building. The flower mixtures we sowed have taken root well and have already attracted many pollinators. And some animals have also made themselves comfortable between the stones and wood.
