Looking back: Planting and pruning course in an old orchard

    03/20/2026

Amidst beautiful weather and with a lot of enthusiasm and dedication, the “Orchard Care” course organised by the Living Campus initiative took place on Saturday, 28 February 2026. Twenty participants – students and staff from the University of Würzburg – gathered at the orchard near the Biozentrum to work together.

Under the guidance of course leader Krischan Cords (Main-Streuobst-Bienen eG), the participants first learnt the theoretical basics of fruit tree care before getting down to work outdoors. A total of 10 trees were planted – six old apple varieties, three plums and one greengage. In addition, some of the existing trees were pruned. In doing so, the participants are making a tangible contribution to biodiversity in the species-rich but neglected orchard meadow.

We would like to thank the Bavarian Sparkasse Association, whose donation has made this course and our work at the Living Campus possible.
