Research

The place where you conduct your research and enhance your expertise in your discipline and your methodological skills is usually your Faculty, Institute, Chair or research institution. Apart from that, there are countless research-related issues for which JMU researchers can receive professional support through the network of the JMU Research Academy. These include:

  • Adhering to the principles of good practice in research
  • Developing your personal research strategy
  • Identifying suitable funding programmes and successfully securing funding 
  • Managing projects professionally and carrying them out efficiently
  • Making your academic writing more efficient and creative
  • Tailoring your academic presentations to different target groups
  • Improving your chances of being published in renowned journals
  • Building networks within the national and international academic communities
  • Enhancing your teaching skills and learning new teaching methods

RESEARCH

  • The JMU Research Academy offers workshops on an ongoing basis to support you in developing your research strategy. We are also happy to meet with you for an advising session or help you find a suitable coach.
  • Information on the topic of good practice in research can be found here.
  • If you have any questions regarding transfer (as well as licences and patents), the SFT team will be happy to help.

FUNDING AND PROJECTS

  • The RAC team will be happy to provide you with personal and interdisciplinary advice about national funding opportunities for your research project.
  • The IZKF provides central services to support research at the Faculty of Medicine.
  • We also offer workshops and online courses on project management on a regular basis that equip you with skills that can be applied both in and outside academia.

COMMUNICATION

  • The Writing Centre provides a wide range of services relating to academic writing in German and English.
  • The University Library is available to help with questions relating to publishing and copyrights.
  • For questions regarding patents and licences, please contact the team at the SFT.
  • The JMU Press and Public Relations Office offers interview training courses.

TEACHING

  • JMU’s ProfiLehre programme offers courses in five fields that give teaching staff the opportunity to enhance their teaching skills.

  • The UWGS is the umbrella organisation for the four subject-specific Graduate Schools for the Life Sciences, the Humanities, Science and Technology as well as Law, Economics and Society.
  • JMU currently has five research training groups and doctorate programmes that are being funded by the German Research Foundation and the Elite Network of Bavaria respectively.
