Space Colloquium Würzburg

The Space Autonomous Mission for Swarming and Geo-locating Nanosatellites (ADELIS-SAMSON) from Technion incorporates three autonomous nanosatellites, aiming to perform geolocation of a terrestrial emitter, while controlling their relative positions using inter-satellite communication. The mission was launched in March 2021, and is operated from an advanced mission control center that was built in the Asher Space Research Institute at Technion. This presentation discusses the ADELIS-SAMSON project in the context of distributed space systems, and the main technological developments to realize this mission, including the formation control laws, communication and propulsion system, as well as assembly, integration and testing of the three satellites.

Curriculum Vitae Dr. Gurfil: Pini Gurfil, the Shirley and Burt Harris Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Technion, Haifa, received his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Technion. In July 2000, he assumed a post-doctoral position in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University before he became a faculty member at the Technion in 2003. His research interests include astrodynamics, spacecraft formation flying, space systems and celestial mechanics. Prof. Gurfil has been elected as a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and the International Astronomical Union, and as associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Further, he is a winner of an ERC Starting (2011) and Proof-of-Concept (2017) grants. In 2015 Prof. Gurfil established the Distributed Space Systems Lab at Technion where he served as the head of the Asher Space Research Institute until 2020.
