Satellite Technology students visit the German Aerospace Center in Lampoldshausen.
23.10.2019Professor Oschwald, Head of Department Rocket Propulsion, welcomed our group and introduced the German Aerospace Center Lampoldshausen.
Professor Oschwald delivered an informative lecture on key technologies like the liquid, solid and electric propulsion systems as well as on operational launchers and configurations. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art thrust and payload capabilities of different launchers were compared. Following the lecture the students were given a guided tour through the indoor exhibition and the impressive test facilities at the huge site of DLR Lampoldshausen by one of the veterans in rocket propulsion, Wolfgang Kitsche, who has seen the development of the propulsion testing center at Lampoldshausen over the past 35 years. According to the SaTec student Christian Miethaner "the vacuum test stand for the upper stage engines is impressive. Coolest for me personally was the real, tested engine hardware (Vulcain 2) in the exhibition area. Seeing the size of the engine bell and details of injectors, combustion chamber and turbo pumps. The full size cutout of stage 2 of Ariane 5 impressively showed the size of the launcher."
