Global Systems and intercultural Competence

Information for lecturers

Intercultural competence, sustainability and global responsibility are cross-cutting topics. They are relevant for students of all subjects and unfold in interdisciplinary dialogue. As a multiplier, the "Global Systems and Intercultural Competence" programme (GSiK for short) bundles the JMU-wide offerings on these topics, supplements them with its own events and makes them accessible to students from all departments. Students who take part in enough GSiK events receive a certificate for their additional commitment.

As a cross-faculty project, we are very interested in cooperating with you - also in order to offer students a broader programme with an interdisciplinary view of our subject areas.

Would you like to enrich the GSiK programme? Here's how:

Offer your own event in the GSiK programme

Do you have an event that you would like to open to GSiK students? Please note the following. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Gärtner.

Which events are suitable?

We include all kinds of academic events in our programme: seminars, lectures, workshops, block seminars, talks, lecture series... The important thing is that the content of the event is also suitable for students from outside the subject area and that it fits in thematically:

  • Inter-, multi- and transculturality
  • Diversity, heterogeneity, diversity
  • Culture-specific competences
  • Global systems, phenomena and interrelationships
  • Sustainability
  • Discrimination and intersectionality
  • Democracy and social justice
  • ...and others that fit into the subject areas "intercultural competence" and "sustainability and global responsibility".

How can I register my events for GSiK?

Send us an e-mail

  • Title of the event
  • WueStudy number or permalink
  • Link or event announcement (for events outside of WueStudy)
  • For seminars: Please also let us know whether GSiK students are to take an examination

We would be pleased if you let students know on WueStudy that your course is open to GSiK students. Simply put #GSiK after the title of your course. You can also refer to GSiK in the "Organisational information" column.

Your modules or courses can also be included in our programme as standard. Then you do not have to contact us again every semester, but we will get in touch with you. Just let us know!

What does it mean if I open my event for GSiK?

1. students from all departments and university degrees can participate ...

... therefore no prior knowledge of the subject should be a prerequisite for participation. We repeatedly receive positive feedback that GSiK students have a high level of intrinsic interest and therefore enrich the discussions in seminars due to their diverse professional backgrounds.

2. low administrative effort

We endeavour to make as little effort as possible for you. Shortly before the end of your event, you will receive a PowerPoint slide with a QR code. Students can use this to register on our attendance list. If they have to take an examination, we will then check with you whether the students who have registered have passed. That's it!

Drawing students' attention to the GSiK programme

Not all students are familiar with GSiK. If you would like to inform your students about the programme or the possibility of GSiK certificates, we would be delighted to hear from you. You can use this information sheet for this purpose.

You can find the current GSiK semester programme under Events. We would also be pleased to receive your application. You are welcome to integrate the images into your WueCampus rooms.

Please contact us if you require further information.

Getting support from GSiK

Are you planning a guest lecture or would you like to offer students a special seminar? It is possible to finance lectures or teaching assignments via the GSiK programme. The prerequisite is that the event is suitable in terms of form and content to be included in the GSiK programme (i.e. open to all JMU students) and a reference to the funding by GSiK. Please contact Carina Odenbreit. There is no guarantee that the costs for your event will be covered.
