Scholarships
Scholarships present a unique opportunity. They help students fund their university education and provide financial leeway, e.g. for study-abroad periods or internships. Usually, they combine non-repayable financial support with non-financial support – interdisciplinary events, academies, conferences and workshop or personalised mentoring. They therefore give students the opportunity to learn and grow, both as a student and as a person, to make valuable contacts for their studies and for their future and to build their potential in order to be able to take on responsibility in society in the future. And last but not least: Getting selected for a scholarship or grant will open doors for students and can be a stepping stone into the world of work.
It is for all these reasons that Julius-Maximilians-Universität (JMU) encourages its students to be interested in scholarships and to apply for them – and the JMU Career Centre will be happy to help them select the ones that are right for them and prepare their applications.
In addition to the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes foundation, Germany’s largest and oldest scholarship provider, there are many other public and private institutions that award scholarships. The criteria for the individual programmes vary. But what they all have in common is that they are designed to support young people with potential and to promote equal educational opportunities. Most programmes are looking for candidates with high academic achievement and a commitment to the community, but you will not need to have an average grade of 1.0 to be considered. The chances of being selected for a scholarship, in particular by smaller foundations, are higher than people usually think.
