Leadership Development

The University of Würzburg attaches great importance to the topic of "leadership" and has therefore also defined this as an overarching strategic objective in the HR development strategy2025-2030.

In the administration

  • Since November 2016, the first management level of the central administration has been taking part in a series of training sessions on the leadership mandate and priorities of managers in the administration. The aim is to develop a shared understanding of leadership and to give leadership behaviour a comparable orientation.
  • On the one hand, management guidelines for the university administration are to be developed from these considerations. The leadership guidelines create an awareness among employees and managers of the importance of "good" leadership for constructive and productive co-operation in everyday working life. At the same time, they provide a basis for action in management situations for people with personnel responsibility.
  • On the other hand, building on this fundamental process, a systematic leadership development programme is to be launched for all other managers and junior managers in the university administration.

In science

  • In the period from 2020 to March 2026, the "JMU Leadership Certificate" was offered with great success and more than 150 graduates. This was further developed in the winter semester 2025/26 and tailored more precisely to the target group of doctoral students and postdocs without previous management experience. The new PR programme for teaching leadership skills starts in April 2026
  • Young leaders in science, such as junior research group leaders and junior professors, will be supported with special offers to consolidate their role and expand their leadership repertoire with special formats (further training, coaching, peer formats, mentoring and retreats).
  • Experienced managers in academia benefit from individual support from Human Resources Development, Conflict Management or the Office of the University Women's Representative for their respective concerns.
