Education for sustainable development is anchored in many subjects in the Bavarian curriculum. Young people around the world are also increasingly concerned with issues of sustainability, climate crisis, animal rights, species extinction and social (in)justice. Moreover, teaching English today is not only about making learners master the target language and develop intercultural (or transcultural) communicative competence. Based on the motto “think globally, act locally”, the EFL classroom should also illustrate social responsibilities to learners and encourage them to be better world citizens by acting appropriately. However, dealing with such complex issues in the school context is a demanding challenge. Environmental learning and global education is not just about incorporating new issues into the classroom. It requires a change in teaching and learning in various ways, including more participatory elements, interdisciplinary work, ethical and moral debate, consideration of emotional processes, and independent methods.
This seminar will look at concepts for global education from various theoretical and practice-oriented perspectives and focus on how environmental learning can be implemented in the EFL classroom in a variety of ways.
The seminar takes place weekly and is held in english.
