Category: Blockseminare, C, D

Organizer: Ethnomusikologie // Fachbereich: Musikwissenschaft
Speaker: Prof. Dr. J. Hill

This course will examine in depth a selection of musical styles and social issues from South Africa. We will study contemporary South African jazz, creole carnival music, and African popular musics, as well as some of the more traditional genres out of which these styles evolved. At the same time we will investigate how musicians have negotiated profound social and political changes, such as colonialization, migration, urbanization, apartheid and post-apartheid, censorship, commercialization, and globalization. Political protest, hybridity, and identity will be recurring themes. Throughout the course we will also explore how music is represented through different narrative lenses, such as ethnography, journalism, memoir, documentary, and popular media.

Wöchentliches Seminar.
