DBU grants for doctoral researchers
The Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt DBU (German Federal Environmental Foundation) awards grants to doctoral researchers.
The DBU, Europe’s largest foundation promoting environmental protection, awards grants to help fund doctoral projects that address environmental issues. Since 1992, the DBU has funded more than 1,300 doctoral projects, more than 80% of which were successfully completed. More than 80% of the grant holder who successfully completed their doctorates received summa cum laude or magna cum laude grades.
Who is eligible to apply to apply? Graduates from all disciplines
- who have demonstrated above-average achievement,
- whose doctoral projects aim to develop solutions to environmental problems, and
- who are conducting their doctoral research at a university in Germany.

Who is eligible to apply?
The foundation supports orphan or half-orphan students who have been living in Würzburg for at least 10 years.
Since 2011, the scholarship has also been open to orphan or half-orphan students who have been enrolled in a programme at a higher education institution in Würzburg for at least three years and whose principal residence is in the city of Würzburg.
How do I apply?
Applications will be accepted directly from eligible students.

The DATEV-Stiftung Zukunft Doctoral Thesis Award
The DATEV-Stiftung Zukunft Foundation invites applications for its doctoral thesis award.
Named after the co-founder and honorary CEO of DATEV eG, the Dr. Heinz Sebiger Award recognises doctoral thesis research of outstanding quality in the fields of digitalisation, data protection/IT security, and cooperatives. The total prize money of €10,000 may be split between up to three winners. The Award is open to doctoral researchers from the disciplines of business management and economics, business information systems, and law.

Applications and supporting documents must have been received by the DATEV-Stiftung Zukunft Foundation by 31 May of each year. Applications received after that deadline may be considered in the following year’s competition, provided that they meet the applicable criteria.

German Study Prize of the Körber Foundation
The Körber-Stiftung Foundation invites applications for its annual Award.
Individuals from all academic disciplines who completed their doctorate and have received a magna cum laude, summa cum laude, or equivalent grade are eligible to apply for the Deutscher Studienpreis Award. The deadline for entries is always March 1 of the following year.
The Award recognises doctoral research into issues faced by society that has produced tangible results:
* innovative processes or products,
* innovative models for the organisation of society, or
* informed guidance on issues currently facing society.
Please note that the relevant date for eligibility is the date of your oral exam, not the publication date of your doctoral thesis. To be eligible to apply for the Deutscher Studienpreis Award, you must have taken your oral exam on a date between 1 January and 31 December of the previous year.
The Deutscher Studienpreis Award is one of Germany’s highest prize money awards for recent graduates. Three first place winners - one each in the categories of social sciences, humanities and cultural studies as well as natural sciences and engineering - will each receive €25,000; six second place winners will get €5,000 each.
The Award is open to individuals of any age. You will have to include in your application an easy-to-understand essay of no more than 20,000 characters, written in a captivating style, that describes the key findings of your doctoral research and their implications for society.
