IRTG 2991 – Workshop on “Porous Materials” and “Supramolecular Chemistry in Water” with Guest Visits of Prof. J. N. Moorthy and Prof. Werner Nau
10/05/2026For one month, Prof. J. N. Moorthy (IIT Kanpur, India) is a visiting professor at the Center for Nanosystems Chemistry (CNC). In addition, Prof. Werner Nau (Constructor University Bremen, Germany) joined us on September 28/29, 2026 for an IRTG hybrid workshop which covered the topics of “Porous Materials” and “Supramolecular Chemistry in Water”.
On the first day, Prof. Nau presented two lectures via our usual hybrid format for both the audience at JMU and at IISER TVM. During the first talk, entitled “Supramolecular Chemistry in Water: Understanding and Exploiting Host-Guest Binding Based on the Hydrophobic Effect”, he introduced us to the methodological aspects of Host-Guest supramolecular assemblies in aqueous environments. The second lecture, “Supramolecular Chemistry in Water: From Concave Chemosensors to Convex Transmembrane Transporters”, demonstrated the latest research of Prof. Nau and how supramolecular matrices can be utilized to harness luminescence phenomena for applications like chemosensing in water. The workshop was then extended by a lecture of Prof. Moorthy on “Porous Materials: Our exploits with Porous Organic Polymers (POPs)”, which demonstrated the use of porous materials based on organic polymers to facilitate methods such as e.g. photocatalysis.
During the second day of the workshop, the IRTG 2991 postdoc Dr. Sanchari Debnath (Würthner group), and PhD students Fathimath Nafla Cholamukath (Lehmann group), Johannes Adelsperger (Röhr group) and Louis Schramm (Würthner group), presented their research projects. Subsequently, the audience moved to one of the lecture halls of our chemistry department, where Prof. J. N. Moorthy was awarded with the honorary doctorate (Dr. h.c.), which was also live-streamed to IISER TVM.
