Education for sustainable development in the LehrLernGarten

ESD is everyone's business!

Education plays a key role in the implementation of the global sustainability agenda. According to the National Action Plan, education for sustainable development (ESD) should therefore be firmly anchored in all areas of the education system. This includes: Early childhood education, school, vocational training, higher education and non-formal or informal education.

Why ESD in the LehrLernGarten?

The LehrLernGarten (LLG) is an interdisciplinary practical platform at the intersection between university, school and public education. The LLG's target groups include students, school classes, teachers and other visitors of the Botanical Garden. With our educational work, we pursue the approach of lifelong, networked learning in the sense of ESD. Our focus particularly lies on higher education.

The involvement of JMU students as part of courses or final theses enables us to offer a wide range of educational programmes with changing topics for school and extracurricular - and therefore non-formal or informal - areas of education . However, our educational programmes also tie in with vocational training.

ESD is a central element in the LehrLernGarten (LLG), which is reflected both thematically in specific courses and in relation to the promotion of assessment and design skills in all courses. This enables students to reflect on their own actions and act as multipliers themselves. School classes receive target group-orientated offers that are explicitly dedicated to sustainability education in terms of topics and/or design skills. Selected learning programmes are also differentiated for public educational work with adults in the Botanical Garden (e.g. "Chocolate Workshop").

The educational formats range from "classic" guided tours, lectures or exhibitions to workshops and programmes with a high level of participant activity. We regularly offer specific training programmes for teachers to help them integrate education for sustainable development into everyday school life. The LLG thus offers visitors - regardless of age, gender and level of education - the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the development of their personality and for helping to shape a constantly changing society.
