The Most Important Scholarship and Grant Programmes for Stays Abroad:

DAAD, PROMOS, Erasmus and Bavarian Academic Centres

Spending some time abroad is a great way to gain valuable experience that will benefit both your academic and your professional development. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), a joint organisation of German higher education institutions and student bodies, states that it is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers. It offers a wide range of scholarship programmes – e.g. one-year scholarships for study abroad, scholarships for research internships under the RISE Worldwide programme or research fellowships.

Other programmes include the PROMOS and Erasmus programmes by the JMU International Office, Fulbright Grants for study-abroad periods in the US and Rhodes Scholarships for pursuing a Master’s degree or doctorate at the University of Oxford.

The scholarships provided by the Bavarian Academic Centres (bayerische Hochschulzentren) are designed to foster exchange between Bavarian higher education institutions and numerous universities abroad. Funding for study-abroad periods in Japan and Korea is available under the JASSO Scholarship Programme and the ASEM-Duo Korea Fellowship Programme.

What you should always keep in mind: The application process – both for a study-abroad experience and for a scholarship or grant – will take a considerable amount of time. You should therefore apply as early as possible.
