The Most Important Domestic Scholarship and Grant Programmes:
Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes foundation and other Begabtenförderungswerk organisations, Deutschlandstipendium scholarship, Aufstiegsstipendium scholarship and Elite Network of Bavaria
This section lists the most important scholarship and grant providers, which usually support students at all stages of their university education. The Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes foundation is Germany’s largest scholarship provider. It is publicly funded and is non-political, non-religious and ideologically independent. The other 12 Begabtenförderungswerk organisations are also publicly funded but are run by political or religious foundations or foundations that are affiliated with trade unions or employers’ associations.
In the light of the experience gained during the National Socialist era, the Federal Republic of Germany has thus ‘established a system of pluralistic and value-based support for gifted and talented students that is unique in the world, publicly funded and, at the same time, designed and run by non-governmental organisations’ (own translation). The Begabtenförderungswerk organisations ‘reflect the pluralism and the social diversity of the Federal Republic of Germany. They all commit to the principles of liberal democracy and a liberal state governed by the rule of law’ (own translation). Other important programmes include the Deutschlandstipendium scholarship, the Aufstiegsstipendium scholarship for skilled workers holding a vocational qualification and the state of Bavaria’s support programmes for elite students.
