The KMG – Collegium Modern and Contemporary Studies brings together the existing significant expertise at the University of Würzburg on issues relating to the analysis of the present with historical perspectives into the Sattelzeit (»saddle period«) from around 1770 onwards. The KMG sees itself as a forum for stimulating innovative research and teaching and promotes close cooperation with and the transfer of knowledge to civil society.
The KMG emerged from the context of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, but is inter-faculty in nature. The declared aim is to revitalise cooperation in research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences at our university. The KMG starts with the three profile lines Environment—Media—Ideas.
- Under the umbrella of Environmental Humanities, the Environment profile line opens up perspectives on ecological conditions of existence and crises from the perspective of humanities, social and cultural history.
- The Media profile line deals with questions of mediality and digitality from the perspective of media studies, but also from a historical, philosophical, (computer) philological, cultural and literary studies perspective.
- The Ideas profile line pursues a cultural and idea-historical approach to the study of literature, culture and history in modern and contemporary times.
