Research Training Group 2660: Approach-Avoidance

Insights into the RTG 2660: The RTG Journal Club

12.07.2023

Did you know that there is also an RTG Journal Club? Started in May 2022, a group of Doctoral Researchers meets every two weeks to review and discuss papers relevant to their research.

Both animal and human research investigators can meet at the RTG Journal Club. Basic as well as clinical research is discussed and is thus a practical way to foster interdisciplinarity. Links to interesting websites as well as other important resources can be shared here. Among other things, this is how the Doctoral Researchers prepare for guest lectures, such as in June for the Dinner Meeting with Prof. Grinevich (CIMH Mannheim).

There is a list with a large number of researchers whose papers want to be discussed. Together, the Doctoral Researchers decide on a paper, which is first read by everyone and then presented by one person. Afterwards, there is plenty of room for exchange and discussion. Ambiguities and translational perspectives are discussed.

We talked to three Doctoral Researchers who are part of the Journal Club:

Sabrina Gado, for example, tells us that a Journal Club can broaden one's horizons. It brings her new perspectives because the papers are not always related to her own research.

Eva Masson particularly likes that the selected methods are questioned and discussed.

Janna Teigeler adds that it is often difficult to find time to read papers and that the Journal Club helps with that. It also allows the members to practice presenting science, she says.

In summary, the Journal Club can be an optimal addition to PhD life!
