    Novel anti-infective substances from marine sponge-associated microbiota

    The project TP A5 (Hentschel) focuses on the identification and characterisation of novel anti-infective substances from marine sponge-associated microbiota. Marine sponges (Porifera) are a rich source of secondary metabolites with diverse biologically and pharmaceutically relevant activities. Since 40-60% of the biomass of several marine demosponges consists of microorganisms, current hypothesis holds that the microorganisms rather than the sponge host are responsible for the production of important bioactive metabolites such as polyketides (PKS) and nonribosomal peptides (NRPS). By use of various cultivation strategies, several new actinomycete taxa have been isolated which produce chemically novel and bioactive compounds. Furthermore, biosynthetic gene clusters encoding for polyketide synthases and nonribosomal peptide synthetases have been discovered using metagenomic strategies in the microbial consortium of the sponge Aplysina aerophoba as well as from the cultivated actinomycetes. The overall aim of this project is to use the microbial consortia of sponges for the sustainable production of new antiifective compounds.
