The total external funds raised by JMU scientists in 2015 amount to approximately 119 million euros. In the most recent DFG Funding Atlas (2015), JMU ranks 19th among 105 German universities, despite being one of the smaller institutions in the top 20 list in terms of academic staff. JMU’s medical faculty ranks 3rd in Germany regarding the absolute amount of DFG grants – and even 1st in terms of DFG funds per professor.

In the life sciences as a whole, JMU occupies position 6. JMU’s humanities have been particularly successful in the highly competitive German Academies' Program, currently running six long-term projects with a duration of up to twenty years.

In addition to individual excellence, the university is home to numerous collaborative projects funded by third parties. JMU’s Graduate School of Life Sciences (GSLS) has been financed as part of the Excellence Initiative since 2006. As one of three DFG Research Centres approved in 2001, the Rudolf Virchow Centre (RVZ) for Experimental Biomedicine has been one of the forerunners of the current Clusters of Excellence.

Junior Research Groups at JMU - Excellent Ideas

In order to promote outstanding research, JMU has launched the Excellent Ideas programme in each of its Faculties, offering junior researchers the opportunity to kick-start their academic careers in an esteemed research environment.

  • Are you a junior researcher who has gained experience in an international environment?
  • Have you made a contribution to the international research community while in a postdoctoral position in your field?
  • And now you would like to intensify your research activities, take on more responsibility and work in a dynamic junior research group?

Apply for the position of leader in one of our junior research groups

For an initial period of up to 5 years, JMU provides support for a total of 13 junior research groups across the whole range of disciplines covered by the University. For this programme, the University has identified leading-edge fields of research in all of its Faculties.
