Team-based learning (TBL) is actually more than just a method of teaching and learning. When speaking of TBL, Fink describes a strategy goes hand-in-hand with a comprehensive change in the basic methodological approach of an entire course (cf. Fink 2002, p. 9). Although it is possible to “loosen up” the framework of a previously established teaching format via conventional group work, the one-time incorporation of a single TBL sequence doesn’t work: after using TBL, the return to a traditional learning environment is no longer possible. The reasons for this, as well as why this teaching strategy deserves a warmer welcome, will be explained in the following.
