Nursing Science - New Degree Programme at the University of Würzburg
06/05/2025For the first time at a university in Bavaria: JMU is offering an undergraduate degree programme in Nursing Science from the winter semester 2025/26. The dual degree programme combines theory and practice - including a double degree and remuneration.
Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) is setting a milestone in academic nursing training in Bavaria with its new Bachelor's degree programme in Nursing Science. In just seven semesters, students acquire two degrees: a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and a degree in nursing. A particular advantage is that students receive a monthly salary throughout the dual study programme.
The degree programme is anchored at the Chair of Nursing Science at the Faculty of Medicine and is run in cooperation with the University Hospital of Würzburg (UKW). There are 20 study places available at the start of the programme. Interested students can apply until 17 July 2025. The programme is taught in German.
"Our students learn to shape and develop nursing care on a scientific basis, responsibly and in a patient-centred manner," says Professor Melanie Messer, Chair and Head of the Institute of Nursing Science at the UKW.
Excellent Training at the Interface Between Science and Practice
The degree programme provides a scientifically sound understanding of professional nursing, modern healthcare and nursing-related research. Courses include content from nursing and health science, medicine, psychology, health promotion and counselling. The curriculum is supplemented by content on digital technologies, ethics, law, economics and quality development. "We place particular emphasis on topics that will shape the nursing care of tomorrow - evidence-based practice, digital transformation, health literacy and interprofessional collaboration," emphasises Professor Messer.
In the practical phases during the lecture-free period, students gain valuable experience in different areas of care. These include hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient care facilities, paediatric nursing and psychiatry. In doing so, they build up their professional skills in a targeted manner.
After completing their studies, graduates have many options open to them: in direct patient care - also with extended medical skills - in counselling and prevention, in quality management as well as in research and projects. A further Master's degree programme is also possible.
Application: Step by Step to a Place on the Programme
The application process takes place in two steps: First, interested parties apply to the UKW for a place on the university nursing training programme. After a successful selection process and conclusion of a contract, enrolment in the Bachelor's degree programme in Nursing Science at JMU takes place.
