University - a Democratic Space for Discourse

07/05/2024

On 3 July 2024, a group of "Students for Palestine" set up a camp on the university campus. The university management takes a stand.

A camp under the motto "Students for Palestine" has been authorised under the right of assembly on the university campus at Hubland. In this context, the University Board would like to point out that the University is neither the organiser nor the organiser or supporter of this action. The University of Würzburg is a politically neutral institution. It considers it one of its essential tasks to enable all members to enjoy a peaceful and respectful university life.

Priority: Safety for All University Members

Accordingly, the University of Würzburg is determined to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all students and staff, in which they can study and work without fear. All forms of anti-Semitism, racism, discrimination and violence have no place at the University and will be consistently penalised.

University as a Democratic Space for Discourse

We value the diversity of opinions and perspectives within our university community and fully support freedom of expression and academic freedom. Especially in these complex and challenging times, we ask all students and staff for mutual respect and understanding.

Furthermore, we promote respectful, critical and differentiated discourse at the University of Würzburg, including on controversial topics. There have already been opportunities for academic exchange on the Middle East conflict this summer semester and will also take place in the coming winter semester.

Contact and Support

Various contact points are available for students and staff who need advice or support in the current situation. For example, the Coordination Centre for Diversity offers help and resources for anyone affected by discrimination or other difficulties through the Anti-Discrimination Contact Point.
