Physicists of the University of Würzburg have succeeded in concentrating light in an inconceivably small area. They took advantage of an effect that also occurs when coffee is spilled.

(Grafik: Eri

In patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, the brain is capable of compensating for certain disorders to some extent. How it does this has been examined in detail by medics from Würzburg University Hospital. Their findings may help to improve treatment.

    Vertragsunterzeichnungen in Indien

The University of Würzburg has just signed partnership agreements with no fewer than three leading research institutions in India. In so doing, it is intensifying the cooperation that already exists in the areas of life sciences, space technology, and mathematics.

(Grafik: Molekulare Psychiatrie)

Many genes are suspected of being involved in the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A Franco-German research group has now examined the role of one of these more closely and discovered clear indications of its complicity.

A large number of drugs for cardiac insufficiency, high blood pressure and other conditions take effect by modulating the function of receptors. Researchers from Würzburg, Bonn and Milan have now designed new agents, with which receptors can be finely regulated in a completely novel way.

Bild: Christoph Kleinschnitz

Every two minutes someone in Germany suffers a stroke, yet there are hardly any effective treatments. Scientists from the University of Würzburg are now pursuing a new approach: inhibiting a blood protein seems to mitigate the negative consequences of strokes quite dramatically.

Many pathogenic bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics. New agents are needed urgently, and the quest for them is also being extended to the ant world. It is here that Würzburg biologists have now made a new discovery.

If climate change continues unabated, it is likely to endanger numerous wild bees in high mountains and cooler regions of the globe – with unforeseeable consequences for biodiversity there. This is the conclusion being drawn by scientists from the University of Würzburg’s Biocenter based on their research.

Bild: Physikalisches Institut

Physicists have succeeded in using semiconductor nanostructures to produce single photons electrically and transfer them via a quantum channel. The application of these single photon sources is seen as further progress toward broader use in secure data communication.

Grafik: Dietmar Geiger

Broccoli and other plants use mustard oils to ward off pests. These natural substances are also thought to have a preventive effect on cancer. A German-Danish team is now presenting new findings about mustard oils in plant science in “Nature” – with interesting prospects for agriculture.

Many wetlands are difficult to observe over a long period. The reason for this is that the volume of water they channel varies all the time. Scientists from the University of Würzburg are now proposing a new method that allows wetland dynamics to be measured for the first time.
