The Staatsexamen is required for access to certain professions that are regulated by the German government. Examples for regulated professions are physicians, pharmacists, teachers, lawyers, judges, and public prosecutors.
Students in Staatsexamen degree programmes study at universities and conclude their studies with a state examination (Staatsexamen). In most cases, the students receive practical training or postgraduate professional preservice training after the first Staatsexamen, which then is followed by the second Staatsexamen.
