Who is actually working in an archive that preserves the history and stories of psychology? Very important: the restorers Esther Gildemann and Franziska Fierdag. They take care of the archival material in terms of restoration and conversation, so that the documents, books, old films, apparatus and instruments are not eaten up by time and years.

The Institute of Psychology at the University of Würzburg was established 125 years ago. Shortly after its foundation in 1896, it resulted in a world-renowned school: the Würzburg School of Thought.

"It's a boy!" On the 200th Birthday of Hermann von Helmholtz on August 31, 2021

Potsdam, 1821: "Hurray, it's a boy!" is the Helmholtz family's toast to little Hermann, who would celebrate his 200th birthday on August 31. What else would he have invented or discovered to this day? He is still present today as the namesake of the Association of German Research Centers and, of course, in his great discoveries.

William Stern has been one of the outstanding pioneers of psychology. We owe him a debt of gratitude for the development of the intelligence quotient, the tone variator, the first institute of applied psychology, and differential psychology among other things. At only 38 years old, he received an honorary doctorate from Clark University. April 29, 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of his birth.

It sounds like a high-tech-story but has it’s origins in a time long ago. It is small, too, but far away from nano-size. Nevertheless, it was made visible in “nano”, the 3sat science magazine.

Rediscovered: Karl Marbe’s „Nachlass“

For several decades, the “Nachlass” of Karl Marbe presumed lost. As recently as 2013 and after an extensive research, the AWZ succeeded to retrieve many documents belonging to Karl Marbe’s “Nachlass”. A finding aid was produced and is now available for further historic research.

The privately owned historically significant Nachlass of Carl Stumpf (1848-1936) has been given to the Adolf-Würth-Center for the History of Psychology.

Unknown Lewin Films online available

We are very happy to make six of Kurt Lewin's films, which were so far unknown, online available. The films were produced between 1933 and approx. 1940. They show Lewin's familiy and possibly some early studies of infantile eating behavior.

Hermann von Helmholtz’s research into hearing

H. v. Helmholtz (1821–1894) conducted detailed research into the physiology and psychophysics of hearing. In a computer animation we show the structure and functionality of the acoustic organ und thus remind of the Helmholtz’s research achievement.
