"Reasons, causes, and moral agents" is an invited speaker series to be held at the University of Würzburg. On the 8th of December 2022, Professor Maria Alvarez will give a presentation on the topic "Agency and Responsibility: the (Dual) Significance of Alternative Possibilities".
"Reasons, causes, and moral agents" is an invited speaker series to be held at various dates in 2022 and 2023. The guiding purpose of the series is, in short, to consider different approaches to the titular themes over a broad timeframe. This theme can be restated as: kinds of reasons and causes that are involved in making possible or bringing about our choices and activities, most specifically in the area of morality, though not exclusively.
Professor Maria Alvarez is well known and highly esteemed for her published academic work in (only to give a brief indication) various aspects of philosophy of action, moral responsibility, choices and abilities, reasons for action, normativity, and agential causation. In fact, one might say that all possible aspects of our speaker series fall withing Prof. Alvarez’s field of interest. Currently head of the Philosophy Department at King’s College London, Prof. Alvarez has previously held positions at the Universities of Reading, Oxford, and Southampton. She is, in addition, Co-Editor of Philosophy, the Royal Institute of Philosophy’s own journal. Furthermore, Prof. Alvarez has brought philosophy to a broader audience through contributing to the Guardian newspaper in an article regarding the ethics of covid passports, and by appearing in the BBC Radio 4 program, ‘The Philosopher’s Arms: Weakness of Will’.
