    Tricky invaders

    Chlamydia are the triggers for a whole range of serious diseases. At the same time, the bacteria are dependent for their survival on support from the cells they attack. The tricks they use here have been examined more closely by microbiologists from the University of Würzburg.

    The progressive salinisation of soils is becoming increasingly problematic for farming, jeopardising the supply of a growing world population. Scientists from Germany and Australia are sounding alarm over this development, calling for new efforts to breed salt-tolerant crops.

    They are termed adhesion G protein-coupled receptors. These receptors are involved in a wealth of vital functions in the body and therefore represent a promising target for drugs, yet relatively little is known about how they work. A new research unit is keen to change this.
